Locomotive 6201 'Princess Elizabeth' was built at Crewe in 1933 to a design by William Stanier, and was specifically designed for long distance, non-stop running. In November 1936 the locomotive travelled non-stop from Euston to Glasgow, and the following day returned non-stop to Euston. The average speed was 70mph in each direction, a steam record that still stands today. The driver, Tom Clark of Crewe, was awarded the OBE for his achievement.
'Princess Elizabeth' was purchased from BR in 1962, and delivered to Ashchurch in 1963. The 'Princess Elizabeth' Society was formed shortly afterwards, and still owns and operates 6201 on the main line. The Society is, and always has been, run by volunteers who give their time and money to preserve this historic locomotive.
The locomotive was named after Her Majesty the Queen when she was a young girl, and the Society has always maintained contact with the Palace. They presented Her Majesty with a model of the locomotive at Crewe in 1987.
The DVD features all-action footage with no commentary.
