For details of this soundtrack, please see track no. 17 in listing below.
Tracks are as follows:
1. 45407 Wilpshire (1-5-01) On a May evening 45407 emerges from the depths of Wilpshire tunnel on a rising gradient of 1 in 68. With the cut off set at 65% and a load of ten coaches, the Black Five powers past and away towards the summit.
2. 6024 Oldfield Park (5-6-99) On an early summer’s afternoon in the peace and quiet of the suburbs, we hear 6024 King Edward I, almost a mile away, setting off from Bath Spa Station. As the train accelerates, driver Davies gives the loco her head and the King storms past and away through Oldfield Park Station.
3. 4936/5029 Exeter (16-4-2001) Kinlet Hall and Nunney Castle raise the echoes as they depart north from Exeter St Davids Station.
4. 6024/4936 Hemerdon (25-11-2000) In the cutting at Hemerdon summit on a windy November evening, just as darkness is falling, we can hear the distant syncopated beats from the two and four cylinder locomotives 4936 Kinlet Hall and 6024 King Edward I get louder and louder as they slog up the 1 in 42 gradient with thirteen on. Passing between the bridges they top the summit and disappear into the night.
5. 48151 freight Ribblehead (19-12-200) Next to Ribblehead Viaduct with a howling gale blowing across the moorland, we hear a distant 8F slip as she gets to grips with an 840 ton ballast train from Ribblehead Sidings As the locomotive gets nearer the sound of the wind is extinguished by the blast from the chimney and the train passes over the viaduct and away towards Blea Moor.
6. 45407/45110 Hemerdon (15-8-99) On a dry rail two Black Fives with thirteen on approach through the woods up the 1 in 42 gradient of Hemerdon Bank. As they come into view all is not well on the footplate of 45110 for, with a poor fire and boiler pressure down to 120 lbs, speed is beginning to drop. Leading locomotive 45407 is fortunately on the mark and as she takes the lion’s share of the load the regulator is put in full second valve and cut off set at 75%. With 45407 now flat out speed is held at around 4mph and, as the locomotives pass, the passengers at every open window watch with anticipation as the summit slowly inches into view.
7. 80079/80080 Nhadog Isaf (17-10-99) On a beautiful autumn afternoon near the isolated northern portal of Ffestiniog Tunnel a train approaches on the 1 in 60 gradient. Having got into trouble lower down the line, leading loco Standard Class 4 Tank 80079 is now being banked by sister engine 80080.
8. 60800 Dainton (25-4-99) At the head of a nine coach train and in pouring rain 60800 Green Arrow works up the last few hundred yards to Dainton Tunnel with a typical display of awesome V2 power.
9. 45110/80079 Lickey Banker (11-12-99) At the lineside half way up the Lickey Bank, at twilight, we can hear a train just leaving Bromsgrove. With Black Five 45110 at the front and Standard 4 Tank 80079 banking, the 1 in 37 gradient had both locos working hard. As they pass in turn and head way towards the summit still half a mile away, the Banker seems to be making most of the noise.
10. 48151 Settle freight (19-12-2000) On a windy, rocky outcrop high above the town of Settle on a cold and dull December morning we hear an 8F in the distance approaching with a load of empties from Hellifield. As the train passes through the town below in the valley, we can hear the short wheelbase Ballast wagons rattling along over the 60ft lengths of rail.
11. 60800 Hemerdon (15-5-99) Green Arrow makes heavy work of a nine coach train as she approaches Hemerdon Summit. Having lost speed on the lower slopes, the V2’s strong three cylinder beat re kindles memories of the Waverley route and Peter Hanford’s recordings from the 1960’s.
12. 45407 Copypit (20-1-2001) At Portsmouth on the climb to Copy pit with a dog barking in the village, the sound of a distant Black Five working a heavy passenger train can be heard down the valley. As the train approaches, the driver has got the sanders on hoping the engine will keep its feet on the 1 in 65 gradient. Passing directly below, the sound from the chimney is stark as the train slowly winds its way between the houses and away up the valley towards the summit.
13. 6024 Wilmcote Bank (13-11-99) On a damp November morning, before sunrise, 6024 King Edward I approaches with a heavy train from Stratford. Slipping in the distance the loco keeps its feet as it passes close by and heads away towards Wilmcote summit with a diesel at the rear. As the sound dies away the King begins to slip once more testing the drivers skills as the 1 in 75 gradient makes its presence felt.
14. 4936/5029 Dainton (14-4-2001) On a fresh spring morning next to the east portal of Dainton Tunnel the wind carries the distant sound of a double header as 4936 Kinlet Hall and 5029 Nunney Castle approach Stoneycombe Quarry with a thirteen coach express. A startled pheasant scatters from the hedgerow as the train emerges from Stoneycombe Woods and the sun catches the sculptured exhausts from the two locos. With the sound reaching a syncopated crescendo the train passes triumphantly and enters the short tunnel and the summit.
15. 60800 Leaving Par (15-5-99) Late spring countryside sounds accompany the distinctive three cylinder beat of 60800 Green Arrow as the loco works a nine coach train away from Par.
16. 45407 Knucklas Viaduct (24-6-200) To the sound of birdsong in the wood behind, 45407 passes through Knucklas station and approaches the gracious viaduct in the valley below. As the Black Five slogs away and out of sight the wind carries the sound back down the valley.
17. 6024 Whiteball (northbound) (14-4-2001) Spring birdsong provides a tranquil backdrop to the sound of a King in full cry as the train approaches from Exeter and works away into Whiteball Tunnel.
18. 60800 Bincombe Tunnels (7-8-99) Hauling an eleven coach train and Class 37 Diesel (550 tons), 60800 Green Arrow approaches from Weymouth. Passing through the first short tunnel at Bincombe, the loco powers past on a 1 in 52 gradient with steam to spare and enters the second longer tunnel still short of the final summit. A redundant Class 37 Diesel rumbles away at the rear doing little to assist with the load.
19. 48151 Blea Moor freight (19-12-2000) Sheltering from the pouring rain beneath the bridge just to the north of Blea Moor Box we hear an 8F approaching with a freight. To the accompaniment of thunder claps, the Ballast train passes and works away towards the summit in Blea Moor Tunnel.
20. 6024 Whiteball (southbound) (14-4-2001) Near the northern end of Whiteball Tunnel on a spring morning a King approaches at speed with a heavy twelve coach train.
21. 80098 Dainton (30-4-2000) On a perfect still spring evening just as the birds are beginning to roost, a local passenger train can be heard leaving Aller Jnc and approaching through Stoneycombe Woods. With the birds trying to outdo the sound of the tank engine, the locomotive finally wins the battle as it storms past and enters Dainton Tunnel.
22. 61264 Nr Kennethmont (30-9-2000) In the valley just north of Insch on the line from Aberdeen to Inverness B1 61264 heads north in purposeful manner on the twisting winding open railway.
23. 4936/5029 Hemerdon (16-4-2001) Late on a sunny spring afternoon about a third of a mile from the summit, the sound of a double header gets louder and louder as the locos do battle with the 1 in 42 gradient. Having passed, the train soon begins to gather speed as it climbs away over the summit.
