In this programme we look back at almost 30 years of steam on the Fort William to Mallaig line.

The programme contains a wealth of stunning shots of the locomotives hard at work, and blends beautiful Celtic themes with the grandeur and dramatic scenery that abounds. As well as the line from Fort William, we also feature the Inverness-Kyle of Lochalsh line where we see K4 61994 The Great Marquess running in superb Spring conditions.

The story begins with a look at 673 Maude running in 1984 when we captured the action from behind the tender of the locomotive as it worked from Fort William to Arisaig. This unique footage is some of the rarest ever taken on the line. We continue through 1988 and 1989 where we see 3442 The Great Marquess. It was the first time the K4 had been back at Fort William since 1961. Other locomotives featured are B1 61264, K1 62005, Black Fives 45407, 44871 and 5305, plus more recent film of 61994 The Great Marquess running in BR lined black livery.

There are also stunning scenes on the West Highland main line at Carrour, where the nearest road is 10 miles away, and at Rannoch viaduct in the middle of Rannoch moor where we see 62005 and 61994 double heading a northbound train.

The programme concludes with an in-depth look at the the final week of the 2012 season. For a few days that week, the Autumn conditions were the best ever seen on the line.
